To become a bus driver in California, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • Get a CDL: You need a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a “P” endorsement to drive a vehicle that carries more than 10 people. 
  • Complete classroom instruction: You need to complete at least 20 hours of classroom instruction. 
  • Pass written tests: You need to pass four written tests at the DMV and two written tests at the CHP. 
  • Pass a physical exam: You need to pass a physical examination. 
  • Complete a driving training course: You need to complete a 20-hour driving training course. 
  • Pass driving tests: You need to pass the driving tests with the CHP. 
  • Pass a drug test: You need to pass a pre-employment drug test. 
  • Get fingerprinted: You need to register for fingerprinting. 

The time it takes to get a CDL can vary from three weeks to six months. On average, it takes about seven weeks if you attend a full-time driver training program
